I’ve developed a fascination with the way coastal people use their hands, and the way that their hands seem to embody the very nature and culture of what it means to be a coastal person. This selection of photos comes from my fieldwork around the world over the last decade. From Southeast Asia to Northwest Mexico, the sight of people working with their hands evokes feelings of strength, dexterity, knowledge, care, and resilience. All photos are by Philip A. Loring and cannot be used without permission.
